Uranium mine beneficiation plant process

Once uranium ore extracted from the mine (open-pit or underground), uranium must be separated from its rock matrix and stripped of as many impurities as possible. To avoid needlessly transporting many metric tons over long distances, this concentration operation is carried out in the immediate vicinity of the mining sites.

In the uranium ore processing plant, the ore is:
crushed and ground by mechanical means,
processed and purified by chemical solutions,
extracted from the resulting liquor using organic solutions or ion exchange resins,
washed, filtered,
precipitated and dried.

After drying, a solid, concentrated uranium is obtained called "yellow cake" (due to its color and its doughy texture at the end of the procedure) containing around 75% uranium, or 750 kilograms per metric ton.

Uranium mine crushing & conveying :

The simplified flow chart of uranium mining milling process is: vibrating feeder -> PE jaw crusher -> cone crusher (or Impact crusher, VSI crusher) -> vibrating screen -> belt conveyor - > stockpile.

Uranium ore removed from the pit will be transported to a mobile primary crusher, and then taken by conveyors to two HP cone crushers for secondary crushing and to four HP cone crushers for tertiary crushing, to produce a final product size of 38mm. The material is then delivered to the agglomerators and heap leach pad.

Uranium production :

After mining, ore is transported to a nearby mill for processing.

Uranium ore is a mixture of valuable minerals and waste. The first step in milling is to crush the ore, unless it is in a solution already, and treat it with acid to separate the uranium metal from unwanted rock material. Ore body containing uranium is loosened from surrounding rock by blasting with explosives. After each blast, electric shovels load the ore-bearing rock into haul trucks, which deliver the ore to primary crushers. These jaw crushers, cone crushers can break the mined uranium ore into pieces measuring approximately 16 centimetres in size within 10 minutes.

The ore passes through another three crushing stages, further reducing its size to the consistency of fine sand in the rod mills. Sulphuric acid is used as a leaching agent to dissolve uranium out of the rock. Manganese and iron oxide are added to oxidise the uranium to a soluble state in order to improve the extraction of uranium from the rock. Rotoscoops and thickeners separate the solution from the ground rock, with solid waste material being pumped into tailings dams for disposal.

The first stage in the recovery of uranium from the solution is the continuous ion exchange process. Here, the solution comes into contact with specially formulated resin beads where the uranium is absorbed into the resin and is preferentially extracted from the solution. An acid wash strips uranium from the beads. The uranium-rich solution is pumped into a solvent extraction plant where it is further concentrated and remaining impurities removed. Gaseous ammonia is then added to the uranium solution, causing a precipitate called yellow cake to form. Yellow cake is dried and roasted at temperatures in excess of 600°C to produce the final product of the process: uranium oxide in powder form.

What is Refining and Conversion?

After milling, yellowcake requires further processing. First it is refined to remove impurities which produces high-purity uranium trioxide (UO3). Then, depending on the type of reactor for which it will be used, the UO3 is converted into powdered uranium dioxide (UO2) or uranium hexafluoride (UF6). If converted to UO2, the fuel is ready to be fabricated into fuel pellets for CANDU reactors. If converted to UF6, it must undergo two more steps, enrichment and subsequent conversion to enriched UO2, before it can be finally pressed into usable fuel pellets for light water reactors.

If the processing is completed by Cameco, refinement to UO3 is carried out at its refinery in Blind River, Ontario. Uranium trioxide is trucked 600 km to the Port Hope conversion facility, also in Ontario, for further processing into UO2 or UF6.

Uranium mine:

Most uranium ore is mined in open pit or underground mines. The uranium content of the ore is often between only 0.1% and 0.2%. Therefore, large amounts of ore have to be mined to get at the uranium. In the early years up until the 1960's uranium was predominantly mined in open pit mines from ore deposits located near the surface.
