Ball cement mill:

Ball cement mill grind materials by rotating a cylinder with steel grinding balls, causing the balls to fall back into the cylinder and onto the material to be ground.

Ball cement mill is generally used to grind material 1/4 inch and finer, down to the particle size of 20 to 75 microns. To achieve a reasonable efficiency with ball mills, they must be operated in a closed system, with oversize material continuously being recirculated back into the cement ball mill to be reduced. Various classifiers, such as screens, spiral classifiers, cyclones and air classifiers are used for classifying the discharge from ball mills.

Vertical cement mill:

Traditionally, cement production plant use ball mill to grind cement clinker and gypsum into cement, but with the continual increasing demand for portland cement and constant pressure for reduced energy consumption, producers are exploring a wide variety of cost-saving manufacturing options. One option is vertical roller mill technology for finish grinding.

Vertical roller cement mills present a compact and efficient grinding method. Clinker and gypsum is ground on a rotating table that passes under large rollers. Material is forced off the table by centrifugal force, where it is then swept up into an airstream to a classifier immediately above. Just as with a ball mill, material that is too coarse is returned to the table for additional grinding while material that is fine enough is collected as product. The compact design of a vertical roller mill allows it to dry, grind, and classify, all within one piece of equipment and all in a relatively compact space. Vertical roller mill technology allows: (1) power consumption savings; (2) consistent product quality and (3) process simplification.
